After a scenic drive from Moshi, we arrive at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Once permits are issued, our trek through the rainforest begins. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so climbing poles and gaiters are recommended. We reach Mti Mkubwa Camp at 2785m for a well-deserved rest.
Leaving the rainforest behind, we ascend to the Shira Plateau, offering wide views of the surrounding landscape. The temperatures start to drop as we gain altitude. We set up camp at Shira I Camp (3504m) and enjoy the remarkable views of the Western Breach glaciers.
Today, we explore the Shira plateau and walk east toward Kibo's glaciered peak. The plateau leads us to Shira II Camp, and we continue to Moir Hut for an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth, and we spend the night at Shira Hut (3895m).
This day is crucial for acclimatization. We ascend a ridge toward the Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation at 4650m. Afterward, we descend to Barranco Camp (3986m), passing the impressive Barranco Wall. This day offers breathtaking views and prepares us for the summit push
We conquer the challenging Barranco Wall and continue to the Karanga Valley. The impressive agility of our crew as they navigate the wall leaves us in awe. Afterward, we reach Karanga Camp (4034m) for a shorter day of hiking, ideal for acclimatization.
We hike to Barafu Camp (4662m), marking the completion of the Southern Circuit. The camp offers stunning views of the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. After an early dinner, we rest and prepare for the summit day ahead.
The day begins before dawn as we embark on the challenging summit push. We ascend through the glaciers and scree, reaching Stella Point on the crater rim. A short rest rewards us with a magnificent sunrise. From there, we continue to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking in the achievement, we descend to Mweka Camp (3106m) via Barafu for a well-deserved rest.
We start the final descent to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates. The terrain becomes wet and muddy as we enter the rainforest. Climbing poles and gaiters are recommended for the steep and slippery sections. At the gate, a vehicle will transfer us back to Moshi, where you can enjoy a hot shower, dinner, and celebrate your incredible journey.
