Day-by-Day Itinerary
Distance: 8 km
Altitude: Marangu Gate 1,870m to Mandara Hut 2,720m
Time: 3–4 hours trekking
Vegetation / Physical Features: Montane rainforest, green forest trail, tall trees, small streams, birds, and possible blue monkeys or colobus monkeys
After breakfast, our team will pick up your family from Arusha or Moshi and drive to Marangu Gate for registration, guide briefing, and final preparation. This first day gives your family a gentle introduction to Kilimanjaro as you begin walking through the beautiful rainforest zone. The trail is shaded, fresh, and scenic, making it enjoyable for parents, teenagers, and family members who love nature. Our guide will set a comfortable family pace, allowing enough time for rest, water breaks, photos, and encouragement along the way. You will arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon, where the family can relax, enjoy dinner, and receive a briefing about the next day’s trek.
Distance: 11–12 km
Altitude: Mandara Hut 2,720m to Horombo Hut 3,720m
Time: 5–6 hours trekking
Vegetation / Physical Features: Heath and moorland zone, giant heathers, open hills, mountain ridges, views of Mawenzi and Kibo
Today your family will leave Mandara Hut and continue higher toward Horombo Hut as the rainforest changes into open moorland. The landscape becomes wider and more exciting, with beautiful views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks on clear days. This day is important for family teamwork because each person may walk at a different pace, so our guide will manage the group carefully and make sure everyone feels included. You will walk slowly using the “pole pole” style, with enough stops for snacks, hydration, photos, and rest. When you arrive at Horombo Hut, your family will have time to relax, enjoy a warm meal, and share the excitement of reaching a higher altitude together.
Distance: 10 km
Altitude: Horombo Hut 3,720m to Kibo Hut 4,703m
Time: 5–6 hours trekking
Vegetation / Physical Features: Alpine desert, dry open saddle, volcanic rocks, high-altitude plains, views between Mawenzi and Kibo
After breakfast, your family will trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut, crossing the famous saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The vegetation becomes very limited, and the scenery changes into a dry alpine desert with open volcanic landscapes. This day requires patience and energy conservation because the altitude becomes more noticeable as you move closer to the summit base. Our guide will help your family walk slowly, drink enough water, and save strength for the midnight summit attempt. When you arrive at Kibo Hut, our team will help you rest, prepare warm summit clothing, check your headlamps and daypacks, and understand the summit plan clearly. This evening is important for family motivation and mental preparation before the biggest challenge of the climb.
Distance: About 21–22 km total
Altitude: Kibo Hut 4,703m to Uhuru Peak 5,895m, then down to Horombo Hut 3,720m
Time: 10–14 hours trekking
Vegetation / Physical Features: Volcanic scree, steep summit trail, crater rim, glaciers, rocky alpine desert, high-altitude summit zone
Around midnight, your family will begin the summit attempt from Kibo Hut toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This is the most challenging and emotional day of the entire Kilimanjaro climb. Our guide will lead your family slowly through the cold night, offering encouragement, checking how each member is feeling, and helping everyone move step by step toward Gilman’s Point and then Uhuru Peak. For families, summit day becomes a powerful lesson in teamwork, patience, courage, and support. Some members may reach Gilman’s Point while others may continue to Uhuru Peak, depending on strength, altitude response, and safety. After celebrating and taking photos at the highest point reached, you will descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.
Distance: About 20 km to Marangu Gate
Altitude: Horombo Hut 3,720m to Marangu Gate 1,870m, then drive to Moshi or Arusha
Time: 5–7 hours trekking, plus transfer time
Vegetation / Physical Features: Moorland, heath zone, rainforest, forest trails, lower mountain slopes
After breakfast, your family will begin the final descent from Horombo Hut toward Marangu Gate, passing again through the moorland and rainforest zones. This final day gives everyone time to reflect on the challenge, teamwork, and special memories created together on Kilimanjaro. Our guide will manage the pace carefully because the legs may feel tired after summit day, especially during the long downhill walk. You will pass Mandara Hut and continue through the green forest trail until reaching Marangu Gate. At the gate, our team will assist with checkout procedures and certificate collection for family members who reached Gilman’s Point or Uhuru Peak. After celebrating with the mountain crew, our driver will transfer your family back to Moshi or Arusha, ending your 5 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Family Climbing Package with pride, joy, and unforgettable family memories.
